A Music Concert and Film Screening of The Dhamma Brothers
Benefiting a Prison and Meditation Education Program

On Thursday November 29th at 7pm at the WMP Concert Hall in New York City, Jenny Phillips, Director and Producer of the award winning documentary The Dhamma Brothers, and Chris Fellows, Co-Founder of Self Discovery NYC, will host a benefit concert featuring Grammy-nominated musician Joaquin Lievano for The Dhamma Brothers Education Program.

The Education Program reviews topics including spiritual and psychological change, criminal justice, sociology, and psychology, and instruction in meditation. The program will be designed for older high school, college students, film studies, religious and community groups and will inform about the structure of the prison system and its detrimental effect on our communities at large. The program is largely informed by The Dhamma Brothers film and includes lessons on meditation to demonstrate how the practice leads to deep personal transformation for inmates.

The evening will begin with a screening of the awarding winning and Oprah endorsed film, The Dhamma Brothers. U.S. Congressman John Lewish said of the film, “The Dhamma Brothers have taken their own passage to India and discovered a practice of meditation that guides them down their inner path to freedom.”

The film documents the convergence of a violent, overcrowded, understaffed, maximum-security prison, and an ancient, rigorous meditation program known as Vipassana. Stories of courage and hope are told by the prisoners themselves - who call themselves the Dhamma Brothers - as they undertake a deep and emotionally turbulent journey inside in search of peace and wisdom.

There will be a brief Q&A and remarks about the The Dhamma Brothers educational initiative by the film's producer/director/writer, Jenny Phillips.
Following the Q&A, Joaquin Lievano, a Grammy nominated musician, will perform a solo concert of songs spanning his career.
The proceeds of the evening will go to the Freedom Behind Bars Foundation, who in partnership with Journeys in Film, is developing the comprehensive curriculum.
