Museum of Science Toxic Traffic Forum - 4/25 April 25, 2010

Emerging research links chronic exposure to motor vehicle pollution with health effects such as asthma and cardiac disease. In this forum presented in collaboration with the Cambridge Public Health Department, you're invited to share your perspectives about what can be done to address these risks in the near and long term.

Learn what is known about the connection between pollutants and disease, and how local scientists are conducting community-based research to explore the areas that are still uncertain. Consider policy options that could be implemented to reduce the risks, and examine what the impacts might be upon affected communities. Share your ideas of how policymakers and residents might work together to gather more data and work on solutions. No previous knowledge of this topic is expected or required.

Speakers include:

Dolores Acevedo-Garcia, PhD, associate director, Institute on Urban Health Research, Northeastern University;

Sam Lipson, director of environmental health, Cambridge Public Health Department;

Lindsay Rosenfeld, ScD, associate research scientist, Institute on Urban Health Research, Northeastern University;

and Wig Zamore, community pollution researcher and transportation planner.
