GREAT RUSSIAN NUTCRACKER

Featuring spectacular sets and beautifully costumed Russian dancers, Moscow Ballet’s Great Russian Nutcracker is an annual treat for the whole family. Whimsical and imaginative storytelling blends with the richness of Russian classical dance to make the Great Russian Nutcracker a unique performance not to be missed!

The Great Russian Nutcracker has been praised by critics for its unique setting of Act II in the "Land of Peace and Harmony." A new character, the ethereal dove that escorts Masha and the Nutcracker Prince to a land where there is no war and suffering, conveys the message of peace. New for 2009 is a whimsically giant grandfather clock.

Ballet master Vladimir Troschenko leads the tour. He is the Director of Odessa Ballet Theater. Mr. Troschenko graduated with honors from the Kirov School and Moscow State Academic Choreographic Academy. He has partnered with such ballet legends as Pavlova, Semeniaka, and Mezintseva.

Principal artists Alexei and Cristina Terentiev lead the production as the Prince and Masha with classical perfection and grace. Alexei completed his early education at the Bolshoi school and graduated from the Moldavian State Choreographical School in 1993. Since graduation, he has been a soloist with the Moldavian National Opera and Ballet Theatre under the famed direction of Yuri Grigorovich. Mr. Terentiev has toured through Spain, Italy, Romania, the United Kingdom and Holland.

Cristina Terentiev was awarded the gold medal in 2008 at the 23rd International Ballet Competition in Varna, decidedly naming her the world’s leading ballerina of this year. She has studied extensively, earning diplomas from the Choreographic School of Chisinau, the Minkus Association, the international concurs in Vienna, and the international organization "Diagelev." In 2000 Ms. Terentiev was enrolled as leading ballerina to the Moldovian National Opera and Ballet Theatre.

Set against Valentin Fedorov's spectacular scenic design, with dancing, larger-than-life puppets and the backdrop of unicorns, exotic birds and animals, Moscow Ballet's Great Russian Nutcracker is a visual delight. At the Moscow Artistic Academic Theater, Fedorov studied under the legendary Valery Leventhal of the Bolshoi Theatre. Since 1988 he has been the art director at the Chuvashia State Theater of Opera and Ballet. He has designed over 40 productions for opera and ballet.

The sets were inspired by the art of French Post-Impressionist painter Henri Rousseau, who worked in the Naïve, Primitive style. Federov is a graduate of the world-renowned, Moscow-based Stanislavski Institute, where the method-acting system used by many Hollywood actors was developed.
