Monthly Slam Poetry Competition October 5, 2006

This is the official site of HawaiiSlam, dedicated to showcasing poets from the islands and running the nationally certified First Thursdays slam poetry competition. Hosted by Kealoha, First Thursdays is the largest registered poetry slam in the world (with 650+ in attendance).

First Thursdays offers $100 in cash prizes to the winner, and features Hawaii's best performance poets, live musicians, MC's, and live painters. In addition, featured DJ's offer up turntable bliss to keep the night flowing smoothly.

Details for the show are as follows:

First Thursdays
Every first Thursday of the Month
Location: Hawaiian Hut
410 Atkinson Drive (ground level in the Ala Moana Hotel)
Doors & Poet Sign-Ups at 7:45pm
Show starts at 8:30pm
Admission is $3 before 8:30pm, $5 after
All ages (parental consent needed for under 18's)

The best spoken word poets from First Thursdays qualify for the HawaiiSlam Team, which is determined once a year. This team competes in festivals on the mainland (including the National Poetry Slam) and also does numerous shows and school visits (assemblies, workshops, etc) here in the islands.
