Join us in celebrating the 35th Anniversary of Modern Times Bookstore With Two Fabulous Events!

1) Not a Day Wasted Saturday, October 21 2:00

COST: $10 members, $15 non-members, $30 membership + admission (one sangria included in price). No one turned away for lack of funds. The first and more raucous of our two days of events celebrating 35 years worth of Modern Times. Soar to new heights of fun with musicians, performers, and staff members as you remember your favorite parts of the little bookstore that still thinks it can! Witness the unveiling of our new and beautiful sponsors plaque commemorating some of the lionhearted individuals who have helped keep the store open. Guests include The Brass Liberation Orchestra, video artist Kirthi Nath, DJs El Doctor from Los Angeles and Lady Selector from New Orleans, plus dance performers from the Change of State Performance Project. There will even be a cakewalk! A benefit for the bookstore.

2) Dance of the Dinner Rolls Sunday, October 22 6:30 St. Martin De Porres Kitchen (225 Potrero at 15th, SF) COST: $20-$100 (to $10,000) sliding scale Enjoy a delightful organic vegetarian dinner to celebrate our continued presence and to say goodbye to one of our finest, Michael Rosenthal, who is leaving after 35 years with Modern Times. Speakers, sweet sounds, and a sumptuous meal by the splendid chef Leif Hedendal, with organic produce provided by Eatwell Farm. We’ll get the evening started with Pat Wynne and the Labor Heritage/Rockin' Solidarity Chorus, followed by classical guitar while you dine. Guest speakers include Kevin Danaher of Global Exchange, Hut Landon of the Northern California Independent Booksellers Association, and author Michelle Tea.
