This Friday, the trio Tortured Soul is set to devastate DC when they perform at the Black Cat with special guest, Angela Johnson. Sounding like a cross between London's Jamiroquai and Chicago's Ten City, the Brooklyn based unit of Tortured Soul has innovated the genres of house, electronica and acid jazz with their mastery of live instrumentation and deep grooves. While their debut disc, "Introducing" is a solid album it can't compare to the intensity of their live sets, as many people witnessed last year when they opened for Los Amigos Invisibles and Esthero.

Joining Tortured Soul will be singer, songwriter, and keyboardist, Angela Johnson, who will set the evening off with her blues/funk tinge of soul. A few years ago Angie enjoyed having her debut single "Ordinary Things" hit the top of the R&B charts, and now her new single, "All I Need," which is receiving heavy rotation on WHUR and XM Radio, appears to be headed in the same direction. As a sonic descendant of Patrice Rushen and Aretha Franklin, it is always a treat to hear Angie worry those notes.

It all goes down,
