Mile High and UNDERGROUND

Mile High and UNDERGROUND, an exhibition dating from Denver’s Bohemian/Beat scene, 1965 to 1987, will be on view at the Byers-Evans House Gallery, Friday, June 5, through Friday, July 31, 2009. An opening reception will be held during the Golden Triangle Museum District’s First Friday Art Walk, Friday, June 5, from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Mile High and UNDERGROUND will examine the art and printed word of the Bohemian/Beat scene in Denver, focusing on the underground presses/book stores from 1965 to 1987. The exhibit, curated by Steve Wilson and Paul Harbaugh, will highlight original cover art, paintings, poetry, publications and events documenting the seminal role Denver played, both geographically and intellectually, within the continuing evolution of the counter culture in America. Included in the exhibition will be works gathered from across the country by artists Saul White, John Fish, Steve Wilson, Angelo di Benedetto, Tony Scibella, Tom Fowler, Alfred Kleyhauer, Frank Rios, and Marcia Ward and others significant to the scene.

The Byers-Evans House Museum will host a reading by poets Janine Pommy Vega and Andy Clausen at 7:00 p.m. on June 24 in the library of the historic Denver landmark.

Admission to the Byers-Evans House Gallery is free, however seating in the museum’s library is limited so reservations are suggested.

Collaborative exhibitions and period performance art can be seen at the Emanuel Gallery on the Auraria Campus, Denver, with an exhibition of paintings and collage by artist Steve Wilson opening Thursday June 4 and running through July 10. On June 6, the Mercury Café and Ed Ward will host A Bohemian Extravaganza, featuring film, music, theater and poetry.
