Dear fellow citizens of New Orleans,

If you do not already know, a grassroots organization called the Friends of Lafitte Corridor (www.folc-nola.org) has been urging the City of New Orleans to convert an abandoned railroad line along the Lafitte Corridor into a bicycle path and recreational area. This would be an approximately three mile long linear park that would connect the French Quarter to the base of Lakeview, passing through historic neighborhoods and crossing a second bike path at the foot of Bayou St. John. Mid-City Volleyball Group (www.midcityvolleyball.org), of which I am chair, is proposing that the city of New Orleans include an outdoor volleyball recreational area along the greenway, preferably near Bayou St. John.

A Mid-City beach volleyball venue will enhance our area by providing a fun place to be active and socialize, drawing a diverse group of people with similar interests and provide a previously unavailable opportunity for our youth to participate in a challenging and rewarding team sport. It could be a focal point of activity and with proper lighting could provide a safe destination for nighttime and weekend recreation.

The Lafitte Greenway Project will be presented to the City Planning Commission on January 27th as an Informational Report, and the public can submit suggestions to the executive director of the City Planning Commission that, if received by January 20th, will be attached as an addendum to the official report. Please sign our petition BEFORE 1/20/09 in support of sand volleyball courts being included in the vision for the Lafitte Corridor Revitalization Plan: http://www.PetitionOnline.com/VballLaf/petition.html.

Thank you,
