PALM BEACH COUNTY FLORIDA - If you ever encounter someone in sudden cardiac arrest, you’ll want to help. CPR alone is not enough -- early defibrillation is the only effective treatment for sudden cardiac arrest.

The LIFEPAK CR® Plus AED and LIFEPAK EXPRESS® AED were created for lay users in commercial and public settings. For use by the first person at the scene of a cardiac arrest, they are designed for minimally-trained rescuers. The AEDs tell the rescuer exactly what to do, one step at a time, in a simple, clear voice. They are easy to understand and use in a cardiac emergency, when every second counts.

They are built with the same advanced defibrillation technology used by emergency medical services and hospital personnel.

Both AEDs offer the quality and performance preferred by the vast majority of emergency medical teams around the world. Sleek and lightweight, the LIFEPAK CR Plus AED and LIFEPAK EXPRESS AED use the latest ADAPTIV™ biphasic technology and uphold the standard of excellence found in all LIFEPAK products.

The LIFEPAK CR Plus AED is available in a semiautomatic and fully automatic model. The LIFEPAK EXPRESS AED comes in a semiautomatic model only. With the semiautomatic models you assess the person in sudden cardiac arrest, then open the device and apply the electrodes. The device analyzes the heart’s rhythm and tells you to push a button if the heart needs a shock. The fully automatic LIFEPAK CR Plus AED requires just the first two steps, and the device does the rest.

AED Maintenance - Maintaining the Medtronic Physio-Control LIFEPAK CR Plus is very simple. The AED has a CHARGE-PAK (battery) and electrodes that both expire at the same time. Both the battery and the electrode pads have the same expiration dates. This means that you replace both at the same time upon expiration, or after each use. Normal operating life is 2 years.

The LIFEPAK CR Plus is virtually maintenance free and has one date to monitor to replace both the pads and the batteries. If the display window at the top of the device shows “OK”, it is “Rescue Ready”. To avoid power failure and maintain its “Rescue Ready” status, the device has two power sources, a small trickle charge battery and a larger internal battery. The internal battery has the ability to retain a charge for up to another 12 months after the expiration of the trickle charge battery. Please note - this is NOT recommended by Physio-Control. You should always replace batteries and electrode pads before they expire.

AED Self Testing - The LIFEPAK CR Plus performs self check each week and a more detailed diagnostic test every month. This eliminates the need for you to turn the unit on during inspections. The LIFEPAK CR Plus AED has a status indicator that shows the unit is "OK" even if it's stored in a carry case and alarmed AED cabinet.

The CRPlus AED is available in two configurations, “Semi-Automatic” or “Automatic.” In the semi-automatic configuration, once the pads have been applied to the victim’s chest, the AED will analyze the heart rhythm to determine if a shock is needed. If a shockable rhythm is detected, the CR Plus will advise the rescuer to “push the red flashing button” to deliver a shock. If the victim is not in a shockable rythm, you can't shock the victim. The AED only allows you to shock when necessary.

The CRPlus AED in the fully-automatic configuration, once the pads have been applied to the victim’s chest, the AED will analyze the heart rhythm to determine if a shock is needed. If a shockable rhythm is detected, the CR Plus will begin charging, instruct the rescuer to “stand back”, and deliver a shock without rescuer assistance. Both versions of the Lifepak CR Plus are programmed to shock only if one of two rhythms is detected, Ventricular Fibrillation (VFIB) or Ventricular Tachycardia (VTAC).

Both Lifepak CR Plus configurations use an escalating energy protocol of:
Shock #1: 200 joules
Shock #2: 300 joules
Shock #3: 360 joules

This protocol is used by a large number of Medical Professionals and has shown to be more effective in defibrillating patients with higher impedance Furthermore, the CR Plus is equipped with pediatric capability which will automatically reduce the amount of energy by 1/3 when the pediatric pads are connected. Pediatric pads are designed to be used on children under the age of 8 years old or 55lbs and under.
