Matthew Schwartz’s work centers on his character Catman, which he uses as an anthropomorphic tool to grapple with the human condition and our vulnerability to the world. Schwartz inserts Catman into a mythological hybrid of Biblical sagas, historical events, and autobiographical narratives to create a metaphorical facilitator for spiritual healing. Catman’s obsession with power and dominance also draws on the language of addictive illness. "Catman's Travel's" features gouache paintings and various studies used to create them, including photographed dioramas, illustrations, and ‘zines.
