Matthew Dear ― who also records under the names False, Jabberjaw, and Audion ― emerged from the Detroit fringe as a producer of austere, while still supple, microhouse, a meticulously honed new millennial genre that flayed the fat off house music until all that remained was crisp shuffles. As the decade unfurled, he transitioned from glitchy minimalism to a more swaggering tech-house measure, remaining meticulous while increasingly indulging blankets of texture. On 2007's Asa Breed, Dear had moments of dance floor-anchored electropop riddled with snap and crackle, while the material on his latest full-length, Black City, is creeping, aching, abraded, and oozing. The album exhibits an air of inky intentions set against swampy tones, while his digitally detuned voice narrates stories of detached lust and reverberant lament as clinched rhythms erode into sleazy drones. Augmented live by a four-piece ensemble, Dear's baritone ambiance will shudder and corkscrew tonight at Mighty.
