Using traditional instruments and found sounds, including snails and a light sensitive theremin, the ding of a manual typewriter, and heads being shaved, Matmos pay tribute to author Patricia Highsmith, '60s gay porn director James Bidgood, would-be assassin Valerie Solanas, and seven other historical figures for the upcoming The Rose Has Teeth in the Mouth of a Beast. Each aural portrait, ranging from psychedelic ragtime to a Twin Peaks-y jazz noir, is accompanied by a commissioned depiction of the subject. Past performances have included simulated cranial drilling and rat-cage plucking, and the duo's carefully tooled recreation of this fractured family album promises to be a stimulating installation of the Whitney's twice-monthly music series.
