Rather than following the pack to Nashville, the singer/songwriter and guitarist stayed in his home state of Texas -- and stayed true to his honky-tonk roots. Some 20 years and 13 LPs later, he comes from the mold of old country music like Lefty Frizzell, Merle Haggard, George Jones and Waylon Jennings. When Jones -- not only a country legend but Chesnutt's greatest mentor - brought him up on stage at the CMA Horizon Awards, he introduced Mark as, "A boy from Beaumont, Texas, who is the real deal."
