Confidence man Harold Hill arrives at staid River City intending to cheat the community with his standard scam of offering to equip and train a boy's marching band, then skip town with the money. Things go awry when he falls for the town librarian and tries to divert her from exposing him. Although he has no musical skills, he inadvertently enriches the town with a love of music. This critically acclaimed film won an Academy Award for Best Musical Score
(Meredith Wilson) and was nominated in five other categories.

The series of 50’s Science Fiction Films was selected with the assistance of Dr. Ed Finch, executive director for the Freeport Historical Museum, and Alan Wenzel, the Speech and Communications instructor for Highland Community College. There will be a brief introduction before the movie and a discussion led by Dr. Ed Finch and Alan Wenzel following the movie.
