The cochlear implant (CI) has greatly altered how deafness is understood, particularly by emphasizing the importance of the brain. But the CI has also been quite controversial in the Deaf community, especially their increasing use in pediatric patients. Because of the neurological turn in understanding deafness, what novel social practices are enacted in pediatric implantation? What new demands are made on parents and how can we better understand what this means for the Deaf community?
