Lychee Lassi - Jazz Concert October 25, 2007

They found the name – how could it have been anywhere else – in an Indian restaurant. The menu vaunted a whipped-to-a-froth mix of yoghurt, water and an exotic fruit: lychee lassi. It doesn’t taste anywhere near as good as the rival beverage made with mango, concedes Beat Halberschmidt, but at the moment it was just good enough to serve as an apt appellation for the band project: “Just happens to be a mixed drink.”

What the bassist in this Berlin quartet means is: the music of Lychee Lassi, the band, is a lot like lychee lassi, the drink. Both are fusions of several disparate elements, all mixed up in a blender; both are usually pretty refreshing and taste best fresh. For Halberschmidt, guitarist Dirk Berger, drummer Roland Knauf and Vincent Graf von Schlippenbach alias DJ Illvibe have made their now legendary reputation playing live gigs in their home town and on tour.
