Jazz Alto Saxophonist Lou Donaldson was born on November 1, 1926. A New Yorker via North Carolina, he is best known for his soulful, bluesy saxophone sound but was heavily involved in the bebop era during his formative years. Some of his first recordings on Blue Note Records were with ambassadors of bop, Milt Jackson and Thelonious Monk as well as other players such as Blue Mitchell, Horace Silver, Art Blakey, Clifford Brown and Philly Joe Jones. In 1954, he joined the Jazz Messengers for only a short stint, but appears on one of their most popular albums, A Night at Birdland. Aside from this, since the mid-1950s Lou Donaldson has only been in bands as a bandleader. His style and artistic vision has allowed him to record in bop, hard bop and soul jazz genres. An inductee in the International Jazz Hall of Fame, Yoshi’s Oakland is honored to have the still-spectacular Sweet Papa Lou for two extraordinary nights.
