Lotty's War March 12, 2010

This new play by St Peter Port writer Guiliano Crispini is set against the background of the German occupation of Guernsey – one of the comparatively obscure episodes of the Second World War.

Part composed young woman, part rebellious teenager, Lotty is fiery and defiant. Thrust into the dilemmas of the German Occupation, striving to be loyal to her friends and family, she finds herself having to succumb to the requirements of an occupying force, particularly those of the General billeted with her. Forced to be a prisoner in her own home and doubted by her own people, Lotty has to discover an inner strength and resolve in order to help the people she loves and ensure her own survival.

Based on true events, this gem of a play is a fascinating examination of how relationships and personalities change in the quest for survival. The lines of loyalty, patriotism and survival often become blurred and Crispini’s script does not offer either the characters or the audience an easy out.
