So much more than your average brass band, trombonist/composer Claude St. Jean’s Montreal nine-piece draws on traditions from Eastern Europe to New Orleans, the Caribbean, and Latin America. Funky grooves and expressive soloists create a
contemporary edge that puts them at home in both mainstream and avant settings.
Full of humour and never predictable, their dynamic and imaginative compositions reach over traditional boundaries to create an infectious world beat boogaloo that swings and rocks. In a recent concert review, Down Beat magazine proclaimed,
“One of the most invigorating shows of the festival…the alt-jazz ensemble effortlessly crossed the boundary with Mingus-meets-Zappa aplomb, swinging, blaring, and joking through an improv-careening set.”
Formed in 1993, L’Orkestre des Pas Perdus (loosely translated the Lost Steps Orchestra) has released four acclaimed CDs: Project 9, Mondo Cuivro, Maison douce maison and T’auras pas ta pomme. With Maxime St-Pierre trumpet, Jean-Denis Levasseur soprano sax, Roberto Murray baritone sax, Philippe Legault sousaphone,
Rémi Leclerc drums, Marc Villard alto sax, Pierre Labbé tenor sax/flute, Bruno Blouin-Robert french horn.
