AT AAKRITI ART GALLERY

3RD AUGUST – 14TH AUGUST 2009,BETWEEN 12-7 PM (Sunday Closed)

The ‘LEELA’ theory of creation found in the Sanskrit texts on aesthetics is akin to the Play theory of artistic creation propounded by many Western art theorists. Both the theories assume that the prime motive force behind artistic creation is the joy the artist derives from goaless play with materials and imagination that results in the creation of surprising objects. The object thus created playfully, exhibit in its body the motivating playfulness and the joy. Unfortunately in most of planned art objects, the labour input becomes so palpable that appreciation often becomes a joyless exercise. It is not so with the veteran artists Kartick Chandra Pyne and Partha Pratim Deb. On beholding Kartick Pyne’s and Partha Pratim’s works, the viewer feels that the joy they have had derived from the play with materials, methods, techniques, ideas, images and imageries they have had to play. But as independent artists, from different backgrounds, they play with totally different sets of concerns and involvements. The curator Pranabranjan Ray has curated the exhibition of the two artists at Kolkata’s most happening Aakriti Art Gallery in August 2009 to showcase the diversity of individual concerns within the ambit of an unified idea about artistic creation.
