It takes two stories to tell about this not‐so simple man and his not‐so‐simple life. One story is about his courage, industry, creativity, persistence and brilliance in producing wealth for his family and influencing Border history. The other story is about the extensive social connections he used and developed on both sides of the Border to produce his wealth and influence. These two stories are intricately interwoven into the fabric of a very complex life begun in Chihuahua, but lived mostly in southern New Mexico. It is a life with pinnacles of success and deep tragedies set against the backdrop of colliding cultures and changing times.

Photographs and artifacts will accompany the talk. Dr. Terry R. Reynolds became interested in the Amador family of Las Cruces over a decade ago. She was curatorially responsible for the large collection of artifacts from the family home held by the NMSU University Museum. In developing museum exhibits based on these collections, she began to do extensive research into the family’s history and genealogy. She also met or corresponded with many Amador descendants. Now, retired from the NMSU University Museum, she is writing a book on Martín Amador and his family.
