David Colwell is one of the United Kingdom’s most respected designers. His furniture pieces have won many awards and are in the permanent collections of the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, Germany. Colwell started his current series of chairs and tables more than 30 years ago as a radical reconsideration of the way we live, given the finite nature of our planet’s resources. His work participates in a long tradition -- from Windsor chairs to the Shakers to the Mini -- in which appearance is born of pragmatism, and style is a byproduct of context, use, and making. For an object to be truly sustainable, he says, it must incorporate sustainability into every aspect of its life cycle, from its raw materials to its production and lifelong use.
