As mankind fights the HIV/Aids epidemic and other health crises, there are profound lessons from the decades-long battle to wipe out polio. Though smallpox is the only disease that has been successfully eliminated from nature in all of human history, polio may be next. In the last 20 years, the number of cases has dropped from 350,000 in 125 countries to fewer than 1,500 cases in just four countries. Serra will discuss this development from his perspective as an insider to the monumentally collaborative efforts of the World Health Organization, Centers for Disease Control, UNICEF and Rotary International.
