Laura Thomas, already well-known in Chicago as a songwriter, will read from her critically-acclaimed first novel, "Shadow Swans" at Next Door Chicago on Tuesday March 13 at 7PM. Afterward she will be offering advice and taking questions about the self-publishing industry.

What would life be like for a young girl living deep within New York City's subway system? Would she be able to find love, light, or magic down below? Author Laura Thomas answers these questions in her first novel, Shadow Swans ($9.99 paperback, $.99 Kindle/Nook/iPhone). With her vivid and alluring prose, Thomas's story of beauty and adventure in the New York underground quickly sinks its claws into every reader.

In her review, literary agent Dana Beck says that Shadow Swans is a "must-read for fans of The Hunger Games," and she notes, "This book pulls you into a dark and magical world you never want to leave."

Journalist Lindsay Sterling compliments Thomas's prose, which she says is "shimmering with tactile pleasure in a paradoxically repulsive underground world."

SYNOPSIS: Credenza R, a shockingly beautiful and well-read young woman, has lived inside the New York City subway system all her life; she has never been aboveground. Ruby Cooper, a filthy rich misanthrope, lives in an abandoned building adorned with hundreds of hummingbirds she has sculpted out of colored wire. Their lives collide, enabling them to find magic in the underground. When they discover a series of government-constructed tunnels connecting all the major cities on the Eastern seaboard, Credenza and Ruby embark upon the greatest, and most dangerous, adventure of their lives.
