Oak Park, IL – Over the past several months, Classic Cinemas Lake Theatre has spoken to and met with a number of moviegoers about expanding its presentation of art/foreign films at the historic Oak Park theatre. Due to the limited number of screens, the Lake Theatre is oftentimes restricted to more popular, mainstream films rather than the foreign or art movie options. After much discussion within the company, the Lake is presenting on a “trial” basis art, foreign, documentary, specialty, and/or classic films to its patrons through a newly created monthly film club.
On the first Tuesday of every month, beginning April 3rd, the Lake Theatre will debut its First Tuesday Film Club, opening with the Oscar-nominated drama “Albert Nobbs” [R], starring Glenn Close. Show times are 1 PM and 7 PM. Movie admission is $6 for matinee shows/seniors and $8.50 for the evening shows. Tickets are available at the Lake Theatre box office, located at 1022 Lake Street.
Nominated for Best Achievement in Makeup, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress, “Albert Nobbs” (2011) is a compelling film about women and the situation they face trying to support themselves in 19th Century Ireland. Albert Nobbs, played by Academy Award- nominee Glenn Close, struggles to survive during a period when women aren’t encouraged to be independent. Posing as a man so she can work as a butler in Dublin’s most upscale hotel, Nobbs meets a handsome painter and looks to escape the lie she has been living.

The art films for this new First Tuesday Film Club have been selected with the assistance of local residents Susie Helfrich, Mary Kay O’Grady, and Bobbie Raymond along with Shirley Johnson of Classic Cinemas. This advisory committee will also secure special guest lecturers and film discussion leaders as well as suggest ways to spread the word about the First Tuesday Film Club throughout Oak Park, River Forest and the surrounding areas.
