Oak Park, Illinois

Oak Park, IL – In celebration of its milestone 75th anniversary, the historic Lake Theatre, at 1022 Lake Street, is showcasing a Classic 1936 Film Series throughout the year. Each film is presented on the second Monday of every month, at 1 PM and 7 PM. The next film in the series, Modern Times, is slated for Monday, July 11th. Admission is $5 per person.

Witty, inspiring, enlightening, and fun…these are the films of 1936, the year the iconic Lake Theatre first opened its doors in the heart of downtown Oak Park. The film series gives patrons a rare opportunity to experience these classic films as they were originally meant to be seen – on the big screen in a historic theatre.

A true classic by a movie legend comes to the Lake in July: Charlie Chaplin’s Modern Times. This “mostly” silent film finds Chaplin playing a factory worker who goes crazy from his repetitious job on an assembly line and his boss’ demands for greater speed and efficiency. Ultimately encompassing the tyranny of machine over man, this cinematic masterpiece is more relevant today than ever. Written by, directed by and starring Chaplin, and co-starring Paulette Goddard, the film is often hailed as one of his greatest achievements and his first film that was an overtly social or political commentary. This classic film marks the final appearance of the Little Tramp and the last of Chaplin’s silent movies.
