LA FOLIE ALMAYER, 2011, Shellac Distribution, 127 min. Freely adapted from Joseph Conrad's first novel, Chantal Akerman's hypnotic drama follows a European trader's faded dreams of finding fortune in Malaysia, and his broken relationship with his half-Malay daughter. Gorgeously shot in the dense, lush jungle, the film showcases Akerman's aesthetic tendencies for long takes and docudrama-style spontaneity. Official selection of the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival. In French, English and Central Khmer with English subtitles. A Belgian beer reception will follow the screening.
