Konzelmann Wine Dinner August 25, 2008

Near the turn of the 19th century, Friedrich Konzelmann of Uhlbach, from a town near Stuttgart, Germany, founded Konzelmann Estate Winery. A restaurateur known for his humor and foresight, he was an expert in food and wine with a daring, creative streak. Friedrich started his entrepreneurship as a home winemaker, making wines for himself and for his restaurants. The wines themselves where excellent and demand for them lead Friedrich to expand his operations.

Friedrich’s great grandson, Herbert Konzelmann continues the family tradition of fine wine making, 100 years later and a continent away in Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario. Herbert joined the winery still located in Stuttgart, Germany in 1958. All was well, but grapes were becoming harder to obtain and growers were ageing with their sons not continuing their businesses. Land was being converted to residential, meeting the needs of a growing population, and therefore was becoming very expensive and hard to obtain in large acreage parcels. Planning started in the early 1980’s to relocate to Canada.

Konzelmann Estate Winery, Niagara’s Exclusive Lakefront Winery, was established in Canada in 1984. Herbert Konzelmann chose the site on the shores of Lake Ontario due to the meso-climate, which is similar to the Alsace region in France. The wonderful balance of sun, soil, airflow and moisture conditions of this vineyard are ideal for the production of clean, delicate and fruity premium quality wines.

Food tourists, grab your passports and join us on a visit to one of the Canada’s premier wineries. We have chosen a nice cross-section and specially paired them with a menu from Grovewood’s award-winning kitchen. Bruno Reis of Konzelmann Estate Winery will lead the dinner.
