Gotot Prakosa's best known and recently re-released film Kantata Takwa (Cantata of Devotion, 2008) is an incisive, epic combination of rock opera, film-poem, and Islam-infused political protest. Shot in 1990, then banned for over a decade by the Indonesian state,the film alternates between a rebellious, revelatory concert-cum-demonstration by several of Indonesia’s most popular musicians and artists, and dark, dream-like scenes imagining an awful, totalitarian future under the continuing dictatorship of then-president Suharto. Through its jarring visual and cultural juxtapositions, the film also provides a fascinating example of the changing discourses of Islam, gender and political radicalism in the transition between 1990 and the present. Since its release, Kantata Takwa has received 8 international awards and has screened at over 30 film festivals around the world.
