KanKouran West African Dance Company returns to Dance Place for their annual performance in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. An integral part of the DC dance community for over twenty years, KanKouran’s dancers possess “astounding strength and athleticism” that “make this troupe such a pleasure to watch” (The Washington Post). Lead by natives of Senegal, Founder/Artistic Director Assane Konte and Master Drummer Medoune Yacine "Dame" Gueye have captivated audiences around the globe since 1983. The Washington Post has said that “It is a rare treat to see West African dance performed with authenticity and excellence.”
