Gill became a member of boy band New Edition in 1988. Gill hit it big as a solo singer in 1990 with the release of his album Johnny Gill, which sold over one million copies, topped the R&B chart and made the top ten on the pop chart. Cameo recorded a funk classic when it released 'Word Up' in 1986. Filled with heavy synths and basslines, the album defined the sound of the mid-1980s. 'Word Up' broke Cameo into the mainstream, reaching the Top Ten on the pop charts.
