The show will consist of her signature large scale landscape paintings, ranging from 4’x4’ to many that are over 8 feet wide. Her works blend abstraction with reality, focusing on the tension between the two.  “Working on a large scale means more to me than the grandiosity implies.  I always begin a painting outdoors, and my whole arm’s broad initial gestures let happen complete arcs of thought that a smaller surface does not permit,” explains Duesberry.

A Colorado resident, Duesberry’s love of the western landscape is evident in a number of her paintings. The Big Picture features approximately 30 of her works, many of familiar Colorado settings, with titles that include Roxborough Diptych and Above the Elk River.  She welcomes the occasion to show at MOA, “…I shall learn a great deal by their juxtaposition in rooms with generous viewing distances allowed by the recent renovations.”

Joellyn Duesberry is a recipient of a National Endowment of the Arts painting grant; her works are included in major collections, including the Denver Art Museum and Smithsonian Institution.
