Modeled after “The Jazz Caravan,” an event that ran in a number of metropolitan cities during the 90s, the organizers of “Jazz Journey” will have bands play at different venues on the LMU campus. The original idea featured different jazz bands playing in several locations around the city with local community members following the bands from venue to venue. Attendees could listen to one band or get a taste of a different band in another location.

This exciting premier event will offer an outstanding opportunity for the public and LMU community to learn about and experience an array of jazz music styles.

Featured artists include Ryan Cross and Lorca Hart’s band, Phil Ranelin’s band, Carol Robbins’ band, Taumbu’s international ensemble, and Nedra Wheeler’s band. The bands will play at various locations on-campus, including The Bird’s Nest, The Living Room, The Hill, Huesman Lounge and St. Robert’s Auditorium.

Jazz Journey is the brainchild of LMU faculty members, Eddie Becton and Dean Scheibel. Eddie Becton has devoted much of his life to jazz music. He not only teaches a history of jazz course at LMU, but hosts “The Jazz Journey”, a radio program on KXLU-88.9 FM, LMU’s campus station. He also writes for various jazz publications.

“This event exemplifies my long range goal of putting LMU on the jazz map and I look forward to the day the event becomes an integral and annual part of our community,” explained Becton. “It’s important for our guests to know they can hear not only seasoned professionals, but also up-and-coming jazz talent.”

The event is $15 for adults and $5 for children.
