Bay Area transplant and alto saxophonist Pete Yellin was originally invited to play alongside tenor saxophonist Hal Stein, who has headlined the Father’s Day Jazz at the Chimes for the past two years. Jazz at the Chimes producer Mary D’Orazi thought the two would be a good team to play on this special holiday because they are “jazz dads,” having been contemporaries on the NY scene in their early careers and both ending up here in the Bay Area. Both were open to sharing the bill and they began to get together to work out tunes. Unfortunately, not long after Stein became quite ill and could no longer play. Stein passed away on April 27, 2008.

This concert will pay tribute to Stein and will feature Yellin and Andrew Speight on alto saxophones, Lee Bloom on piano, John Wiitala on bass and Akira Tana on drums, plus other invited guests including Maddy Duran, Harvey Wainapel, George McNeil, David Udolph, David Matthews, Danny Spencer and Vince Lateano. The concert will be preceded by a Father’s Day Jazz Jam from 11am – 1 pm. (See separate press release.)

The concert at Oakland 's Chapel of the Chimes on June 15th will be followed by an artist reception where the public can meet the artists, enjoy refreshments and purchase CDs.

Jazz at the Chimes is a monthly series sponsored by the Lifemark Arts program that features Bay Area talent. Concerts are held at the Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland – a designated City of Oakland Landmark designed by Julia Morgan. The Chapel provides a wonderful visual backdrop and acoustic listening venue for live music in a setting like no other.
