Jamestown Memories, 1957 - 2007 February 24, 2007

Were you in the Williamsburg area in 1957? How about your family members or friends? The Williamsburg Regional Library is gathering reminiscences and memorabilia of area citizens who were in the area during the year of the last great Jamestown commemoration in 1957. An exhibit will open at the Williamsburg Library in May that will highlight how our area has changed over the past half-century both physically, culturally and socially.

Along with the College of William and Mary's department of Anthropology, the library has organized "Jamestown Memories, 1957-2007" as a way to gather and display these memories. A latter component of the project will capture memories area residents make in 2007, the 400th anniversary year. The Friends of Williamsburg Regional Library and the Williamsburg Regional Library Foundation are funding the project. Students from the College posted many of the stories and objects gathered so far on the project's website: www.jamestownmemories.org.

The library will host one more session where people can share their photos, 1957 memorabilia, stories of the Jamestown Festival and memories of the area from the time. The session will take place on February 24 from 1 to 5 p.m. in Room B of the Williamsburg Library, 515 Scotland Street. Students will document the objects, stories and memories for possible inclusion in the 2007 exhibit.
