Jamestown Memories, 1957 - 2007 November 11, 2006

Were you in the Williamsburg area in 1957? How about your family members or friends? The Williamsburg Regional Library is gathering reminiscences and memorabilia of area citizens who were here during the last great Jamestown commemoration in 1957. An exhibit is planned for next spring that will highlight how our area has changed over the past half-century both physically, culturally and socially.

Along with the College of William and Mary's Department of Anthropology, the library has organized the project, "Jamestown Memories, 1957-2007," as a way to gather and display these memories. The Friends of Williamsburg Regional Library and the Williamsburg Regional Library Foundation fund the project. Students from the College have gathered stories and objects over the summer and posted them on the project's website: www.jamestownmemories.org, where residents can get a look at stories and memories gathered so far of some area residents.

In November the library will host two sessions where people can come in and share their own photos, 1957 memorabilia, stories of the Jamestown Festival and memories of the area from the time. Students will document the objects, stories and memories for possible inclusion in the 2007 exhibit. The fist session will be held at the Williamsburg Library on Saturday, November 11 from 2 to 4 p.m. The second session will be Friday, November 17 from 2 to 4 p.m. Both will take place in the Patricia Schell Memorial Meeting Room of the Williamsburg Library, 515 Scotland Street.
