One of the most inventive guitarists of his generation, James Blood Ulmer’s reputation has slowly morphed from avant-garde jazz visionary to elder statesman of the African-American musical vernacular – jazz, blues, funk, and beyond. Recorded at Sun Studios in Memphis, the 2001 album Memphis Blood: The Sun Sessions (Hyena) featured Ulmer’s deeply personal renditions of timeless blues classics by Son House, Howlin’ Wolf, and Muddy Waters—and earned the artist his first Grammy Award nomination.
