Space currently contributes around £7 billion a year to the UK Economy and supports around 70,000 jobs. March 2010 saw the launch of the new UK Space Agency, dedicated to directing Britain’s space policy. By 2020, the global market in space systems and satellite–enabled applications is set to increase nearly tenfold. But what role does IT play in the industry?

What role does software play in spacecraft missions, space stations, planet landers (e.g. Beagle 2) and satellites (e.g. the Galileo
Constellation)? How about in the support systems on Earth? What challenges are involved in designing, building and testing such life-critical IT systems?
