Nova Scotia-based historian Sandra Alfoldy explores the semiotics of pattern, differentiating between issues of pattern and issues of ornamentation from a primarily feminist perspective. A lively and engaging speaker, she is the author of a new book Crafting Identity: The Development of Professional Fine Craft in Canada (2005). Alfoldy, in her capacity as assistant professor, historic and critical studies, Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University, holds the first university position in Canada devoted to the study of craft.
