Is Nietzsche an Aesthete? A Nietzsche Circle In Situ lecture September 6, 2008

The Nietzsche Circle offers its first series of lectures on Nietzsche’s works in different parts of New York City, indoors and outdoors, starting in September 2008. Lectures will be given by NC advisors and other Nietzsche scholars on a variety of topics and will address not only Nietzsche’s most read works, but also his unpublished writings, his poems, and musical compositions and will draw from his life, his correspondences, and his dialogues with his contemporaries.

Nietzsche shared a time period, a determination to innovate and experiment, a love of the dissident aspects of antiquity, a delight in offending the bourgeoisie, and many emphases of sensibility with late nineteenth century aesthetes such as Walter Pater, Joris Karl Huysmans, and Oscar Wilde. But his aggressive masculinity, his scourging of 'decadence', and his seeming lack of interest in art in a formalist sense make him very different from these thinkers. This lecture will consider to what extent Nietzsche can be described as 'an aesthete'...









Each session is $10 for members and $15 for non-members. Although lectures form a series, participants may attend any number of lectures. The schedule of lectures with information on time and place will in the near future be posted on www.nietzschecircle.com
