On Nov. 12, Kathleen Patterson, of Orrick, will present a summary of the developments in the law of products liability pertaining to the regulatory compliance defense. Included will be a discussion of recent case law addressing the effect of compliance and conformity with federal regulation as a factor that limits a defendant's liability exposure. The session will also include ample opportunity for questions and answers from the audience.

Kathleen Patterson, Partner, Litigation Group, San Francisco Office, Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP

Ms. Patterson focuses her practice on the defense of pharmaceutical, medical device and biologic manufacturers in complex product liability litigation. Ms. Patterson is an experienced and accomplished trial lawyer, having successfully tried to verdict cases in various state and federal courts. Ms. Patterson has substantial experience in multi-jurisdiction litigation, including class actions, multi-district litigation and coordinated proceedings in state courts. She has served as national, regional and state counsel in nationwide litigation on behalf of a variety of clients. Ms. Patterson has also counseled clients regarding Proposition 65 issues, including risk assessment and compliance, and defended Proposition 65 cases alleging consumer exposures to lead, cadmium, mercury and toluene. In addition, Ms. Patterson's practice also involves counseling clients regarding Consumer Product Safety Act compliance, product labeling and other litigation-preemptive strategies. Ms. Patterson has represented such companies as Abbott Laboratories, Bayer Corporation, Bristol-Myers Squibb Company, the Dalkon Shield Claimants Trust, Genentech, Inc., General Nutrition Companies, Inc., and Hoffmann-LaRoche Inc.
