Writers Sharifa Rhodes-Pitts and Sarah Broom reflect on Harlem and the city of New Orleans, looking both at the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina and Harlem’s status as New York’s “black mecca.” Rhodes-Pitts, a Harvard graduate, has written for The New York Times and The Boston Globe, among others. Broom is a New Orleans native whose essays have appeared in The New York Times Magazine, The Oxford American, and O, The Oprah Magazine. Their discussion will be moderated by Noah Chasin, an art historian from Bard College, whose research focuses on human rights and urban contexts.
