‘In Other People’s Skins’ Interactive, Multimedia Exhibition to be Displayed at Cathedral of St. John the Divine June 2, 2010

British artist Terry Flaxton brings his multimedia, interactive art exhibition “In Other People’s Skins” to the Cathedral of St. John the Divine on Wednesday, June 2nd from 7:00AM–6:00PM.

Inspired by Leonardo Da Vinci’s The Last Supper, “In Other People’s Skins” consists of a table covered in a white tablecloth and surrounded by 12 chairs set inside a light-proof tent. An overhead projector beams life-size images of 12 pairs of hands and arms taking food, breaking bread and drinking wine. Visitors may sit at one of the chairs and interact with the virtual guests and inhabit ‘other people’s skins.’ The experience follows a variety of meals shared by people of different ethnicities and cultures from around the world.

The universal act of sharing food and eating together crosses cultural and religious boundaries, and the dinner table is the site where the most effective human communication takes place. This installation celebrates the culture of the meal and transcends religious and ethnic divides in order to unite the participants.
