Sydney Mines has received the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Milestone Award in recognition of the technical breakthrough it achieved in participating in the first transatlantic telephone cable (TAT-1). To commemorate this award, the Canadian Atlantic Section of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers will be holding an official award ceremony on Wednesday, May 30. Presentations will be given by IEEE Historian Jerry Hayes, IEEE Past President Wally Read, and IEEE Region 7 (Canada) Director-Elect Ferial El-Hawary. The award ceremony will take place from 2:30pm-4:00pm at the Sydney Mines Heritage Museum and will be followed by a reception from 4:30pm-6:30pm at Cape Breton University. Both events are open to the public, and all interested individuals are invited to attend these events.
