“As I have said many times since the tragedy, if I could know that my daughters were the last sacrifice on the road to peace between Palestinians and Israelis, then I would accept their loss.”

– Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish

Dr. Izzeldin Abuelaish, author of “I Shall Not Hate: A Gaza Doctor’s Journey on the Road to Peace and Human Dignity” will speak about his resolve to fight for Palestinian-Israeli reconciliation, strengthened in the wake of devastating family tragedy, at The Cooper Union’s historic Great Hall on Monday, March 7 at 6:30 pm. Described as “a necessary lesson against hatred and revenge” by Nobel Peace Prize laureate Elie Wiesel, Abuelaish wrote his book after his Gaza Strip home was hit by Israeli shells, killing three of his daughters and his niece in January 2009. Rather than seek revenge, his plea for understanding has thrust him onto the world stage as a unique voice of humanitarianism, emphasizing the need for mutual respect, consideration and forgiveness. The book also recounts Abuelaish’s upbringing in the refugee camps of Gaza and how education enabled him to move up and out.

This lecture is free and open to the public.
