The Story of Madame de Pompadour
by Elizabeth Woodman
Playing Parade Theatre NIDA and Glen St Theatre for a limited season

Heritage Productions presents I Shall Be Remembered, a one woman play starring Australia’s own Elaine Montgomerie, based upon the influential and powerful mistress to King Louis XV Madame de Pompadour.

Written by Elizabeth Woodman specifically for Elaine Montgomerie, I Shall Be Remembered has had huge success in the UK. Elaine Montgomerie is a veteran of the stage, playing leading roles in the West End, Dublin and in major tours and repertory companies throughout the country. Elaine Montgomerie returns to her native Australia where she began her professional career at the age of 18, after having just left Kambala School where she was head prefect and known by her first name, Ruth Montgomerie.

It was in 1987 that Elaine Montgomerie had the honour of being made a Dame of The Order of St Michael.

“I can not begin to tell you what a great joy it will be to perform in front of my home audience,” Elaine Montgomerie said. “I feel that Australia will always be in my heart and I know that they will enjoy this fabulous and unique production”.

I Shall Be Remembered tells the story of the transformation of a young Pompadour from humble beginnings into the talented woman that captured the heart of a king. Ultimately as she becomes the Mistress of King Louis XV and acquires all the duties of a queen except the title itself Pompadour goes on to become the most powerful person in France. The real story is how this extraordinary woman holds on to her position and as audiences have discovered, there is a lot to be revealed about her glittering life.

Elaine toured the major cities of Australia as leading lady for the J.C. Williamson Shakespeare Company playing roles which included Portia, Queen Hermione, Helena and Viola before taking her talents to the UK where among some favourite roles include: Amanda in Private Lives, Maria in When We Are Married, Mrs Bennett in Pride and Prejudice and also Gaslight, Fallen Angels, Wait Until Dark, The Heiress, The Glass Menagerie, Dangerous Corner, Blithe Spirit (both Elvira and Ruth) and Dear Liar. Musicals include Lilac Time for Tom Arnold. Recently she particularly enjoyed playing Lady Bracknell in The Importance of Being Earnest, which was where she met Cathryn Parker who directed the play.

A very good friend gave Elaine a copy of the only portrait that De La Tour painted Madame de Pompadour which is described at the end of the play. This inspired Elaine to ask Elizabeth Woodman to write I Shall Be Remembered for her.

I Shall Be Remembered is directed by Cathryn Parker, who along with her husband Geoff Parker has also created setting and lighting design for the production.
