This labor of love is a portrait of longtime, legendary Greenwich Village greasy spoon Shopsin’s (a favorite of food connoisseur Calvin Trillin) and its cranky philosopher chef Kenny Shopsin (“the R. Crumb of restaurateurs,” according to /The Village Voice/). Shot during the summer of 2002, as the eatery was losing its lease after 32 years, the film captures this family-run establishment at a critical juncture, while demonstrating how 900 items on its eclectic menu were prepared in a cramped kitchen. The result is a hilarious and heartfelt hymn to individuality, independence and idiosyncrasy -- not just in food preparation, but in life. “An unabashedly home-cooked homage to New York eccentricity.” /-Entertainment Weekly. /Cleveland premiere. 35mm. 80 min."
