There can be no argument that many of the most critical services in any community are provided by the local hospital and its employees. We depend on our area hospitals to be prepared for emergencies, personal or catastrophic. We rely on them to deliver our babies, mend our injuries and care for those without means. Yet we also must look critically at the quality of care they provide and the cost of their services in relation to need in the community. This exciting forum, bringing together leaders of hospital systems across the state will help provide a look at the balance between competition and cooperation in a high stakes market.

Certificate of need continues to be a contentious issue. Oregon’s criteria for CON are relatively few compared to other states, and hospitals across the state are in a growth spurt. What factors guide the decision-making process for meeting demand and remaining competitive? How do hospital systems ensure they meet community needs without overcrowding the market? We’ll address more philosophical questions, as well. If the rest of the industrialized world spends more on prevention and disease management, leading to fewer hospitalizations and lower overall health care costs, should we consider similar cultural shifts?
