History Notes - Featured guest speaker Richard Wadsworth May 13, 2010

Las Cruces, NM –Richard Wadsworth, author of Forgotten Fortress and Incident at San Augustine Springs will be guest speaker at the May 13, 2010 “History Notes” program at Branigan Cultural Center. His presentation is on Fort Fillmore, a pre-Civil War fort located six miles south of Las Cruces.

Fort Fillmore, named for the thirteenth President of the United States, was the first U.S. Army fort established in southern New Mexico Territory. The U.S. Army occupied the fort from 1851-1862. Its primary purpose was to control the various Apache bands that roamed throughout the area.

"History Notes” are informal discussions focusing on local and regional history on the second Thursday of each month from 1 to 2 p.m. at the Branigan Cultural Center. The programs are free and open to the public, no registration is required.

The Branigan Cultural Center, 501 N. Main Street, is located at the north end of the Downtown Mall in Las Cruces. Exhibits are free and open to the public.
