Berkeley?s Oldest Community Club Connects Berkeley?s Past, Present & Future
May 2, 2006 (Berkeley, CA) -- Two legendary architects, Bernard Maybeck and Julia Morgan, make a special appearance -- as channeled by actors David Usner and Mary Beth Barber -- in a skit by Berkeley playwright Belinda Taylor depicting a repartee between the two lifelong friends in 1927. The skit, directed by professional Berkeley dramaturg Erin Johnson, is part of a larger fundraiser and auction taking place from 6 to 10 pm, Friday, May 12, at the Hillside Club, 2286 Cedar St., Berkeley, to raise money for roof and other building repairs. The Hillside Club is Berkeley?s oldest community club (www.hillsideclub.org), dedicated to offering affordable, high-quality arts and culture to the public.
The program will also include a panel of Berkeley Movers & Shakers, featuring Joan Blades, club member and cofounder of Moveon.org and Momsrising.org; Patrick Kennedy, a developer and founder of Panoramic Interests; Mandy Aftel, creator of natural perfumes and author of Essence and Alchemy: A Book of Perfume; Wavy Gravy/Hugh Romney, supporter of SEVA and co-director of Camp Winnarainbow; and John Solomon, a restauranteur (Cafe Venezia, Rick & Anne's) and founder of the How Berkeley Can You Be Parade. Each noted Berkeleyan will reveal how Berkeley culture has influenced their actions and what impact their accomplishments have had on Berkeley (and the rest of the world!).
A live auction will include original art by Italian artist Claudio Nalerio, now a Berkeley resident, as well as a 16-foot long, hand-painted mural of Indian women (in the nude) that used to hang in Berkeley's well-loved Indian restaurant Ajanta. The mural replicates art found in the ancient Ajanta caves of Western India. Rare, original Chinese water colors will also be auctioned. A silent auction will include donations of dinners, art, etc. from club members, as well as donations from many fine Berkeley merchants and artists, including Ajanta, Alegio Chocolate, Cesar, Chez Panisse, the Craftsman Home, Linda Fairchild Gallery, Mary Law, Metro Lighting, North Berkeley Frame Shop, Terracroft Tiles, Terrestra, and more.
An avant-garde music performance by UC Berkeley graduate music student and accordion player, Marie Abe, and bassist Lisa Mezzacappa, will conclude the evening.
